THE STORY CITY HERALD, Story City, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.
Donald Ray Hill, 82, died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at his home in Story City. Funeral services were held Friday, June 19, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Burial followed the service at the Story City Municipal Cemetery. A visitation of family and friends was held Thursday, June 18th at Soderstrum Larson Funeral Home in Story City.
Don was born May 18, 1927 to Torkel and Olive Hill. He graduated from Story City High School in 1945 and joined the Army the same year, serving as a Finance Technical Clerk in North Carolina. He attended Iowa State University and received his Bachelor's Degree in Physics in 1950. Don was married to Irene Bringle on December 28, 1952 at Elim Lutheran Church by Pastor A.J. Bringle. He received his Master's Degree in Statistics from Iowa State University in 1954.
Don and Irene lived in White Bear Lake, Minnesota for six years while Don worked for 3M. In 1961 he joined IBM as a statistician, moving to Omaha, Nebraska for 18 months before relocating again to Rockville, Maryland. Don lived for 44 years in Rockville while with IBM, working as a Federal Systems Analyst in such varied places as the Pentagon and Taiwan. He moved back home to Story City in July, 2007.
Don was loved by all for his affectionate dedication to his family and friends. He took as much pride and interest in the goals and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren as in his own. He freely lent his time (and tools!) to friends who needed help or just wanted company. Don cherished his heritage: traveling to Norway, researching family roots, and maintaining Norwegian customs—especially around Christmas.
Don loved many outdoor activities including how hunting and pheasant hunting. He was an avid fly fisherman from the creeks of Iowa to the mountain streams of Colorado. He shared his passion for fishing with all of his grandchildren as soon as they could hold a rod. He and his family spent countless summer days sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, crabbing off the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and showing Washington DC to out-of-town guests. He also enjoyed woodworking projects, tackling everything from doll houses to china cabinets to home construction and remodeling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Torkel and Olive, and two infant daughters, Nancy and Miriam.
Don is survived by his wife Irene of Story City, Iowa; brother Ken (Joan) Hill of Sunnyvale. California; son Larry (Arlynne) Hill of Grasonville, Maryland; daughter Leslie (Jeff) Satre of Story City. Iowa; daughter Katie (Tom) Gandek of Bolton, Massachusetts: and grandchildren Tyler and Erik Hill, Josh and Rachel Rivenbark. and Kristen, James and Daniel Gandek.
Memorials in honor of Donald Hill can be sent to Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp or Elim Lutheran Church of Randall.
