THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, July 18, 2009.

C. Elaine Ahlquist, 86, of Nevada died on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, from complications of leukemia.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada, with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Carol Elaine Staflin was born on Aug. 27, 1922, in Osakis, Minn., to John O. and Hulda R. (Johnson) Staflin. She graduated from Osakis High School in 1940.

Elaine attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. On Sept. 5, 1942, she married Leonard Ahlquist at the Lutheran Church in Osakis, Minn. To this union, three children were born; two daughters, Barbara, married to Dr. Gerald McDaniel of Nevada; and Cheryl, married to Duilio Mordini, of Madrid; and a son, Jerry, who preceded her in death on December 25, 2006.

Elaine was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church. She also belonged to the AM Chapter of PEO, Martha Circle, Questors, and was a previous member of the Songbirds of Ames. Elaine was a homemaker, but for a short period of time was involved in real estate in Nevada. She enjoyed music, volunteering at the Story County Hospital, and she loved to quilt. Elaine was devoted to her family and also enjoyed being with them as often as possible.

Besides her husband Len Ahlquist, of Nevada, and her three children, she is survived by nine grandchildren; Cindy (Mike) Phelan, of Story City, and their children, Rachel, Sarah, and Matthew; Catherine (Geoff) Hubbard, of Council Bluffs, and their children, Jacob and Luke; Stephanie Richards McDaniel (Ben Richards), of St. Paul, Minn., and their children, Eleanor and AdaMae; Rob Mordini, of Polk City, and his children, Michael and Andrew; John (Nikki) Mordini, of Des Moines, and their children, Sophia, Maria, and Gianna; Angela Ahlquist, of Atlanta, Ga.; Katherine Ahlquist, of Des Moines; and Kelly (Clint) Snider. of Chippewa Falls, Wisc’ and their children, Alexis and Kaitlin; a sister, Clarice Crotty, of Westminster, Calif,; and a brother, Glade Staflin (Sally), of Centenial, Colo.; six nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Her parents, her son, Jerry; a grandson, Les McDaniel; and her brother, Norton preceded her in death.

A memorial fund has been established in Elaine’s name.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with Elaine and her family.
