Ev Cochrane May 30, 1929 - Aug. 10, 2004

Ev Cochrane, 75, a prominent Ames businessman and basketball coach, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, of acute leukemia. Services will be at 7 tonight at Collegiate Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, in Hartford Cemetery, Hartford.

Ev Cochrane was born May 30, 1929, in Des Moines. He grew up in Beaverdale and attended Tech High School, where he starred in football and basketball. He graduated form the University of Iowa in 1952 and later went on to earn a master's degree at Drake. He began his coaching career at Milford Township in 1953. He compiled a record of 131 - 33 from 1956 to 1963 at Marshalltown High School, winning back-to-back state championships in basketball in 1960 and 1961. He later coached at Northern Illinois from 1963 to 1966.

Cochrane moved to Ames in 1968, where he built a successful insurance business, later venturing into real estate development.

Cochrane was best known, perhaps, for his sponsorship of various charities and organizations, including Youth and Shelter Services, Ames Habitat for Humanity and Pride of Iowa.

He is surived by his wife, Marge; one daughter, Michelle; one son, Ev III; and one sister, Doris of Greeley, Colo.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarke.

There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends send a donation to Ames Habitat for Humanity.

Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle is in charge of arrangements.
