THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, May 12, 2009.

Ernie Alvin Schuler, 94, of Zearing, died suddenly Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada, with Pastor Myron D. Herzberg officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Memorial Lutheran Church.

Ernie was born March 29, 1915, to Edward H. and Ida (Richerodt) Schuler, at their home place in Marshall County. He had one brother, Raymond, and two sisters, Evelyn Brekke and Lavonne Bennett. On Nov. 3, 1937, he married Evelyn Frances Miskell at the Lutheran Parsonage in Nevada. She preceded him in death April 3, 2009. Ernie and Evelyn lived on the same farm south of Zearing since 1943. He farmed for 80 years, active in the family farming operation until 2008. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. He loved all aspects of farming; he enjoyed family gatherings, traveling and fishing trips. He and Evelyn enjoyed the winter months in Florida for many years. His formal education was completed at graduation from St. John’s Lutheran School in rural State Center. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner.

He is survived by three children, Shirley (Marlin) Klonglan, of Nevada, Connie (Ron) Robinson, of Keosauqua, and Robert (Faye) Schuler, of Zearing; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Sean) McKee, Blaine (Lynelle) Klonglan, Nathan Robinson, Ross (Katie) Robinson, Nicolas (Kathy) Schuler, Jason Schuler, Katelyn Schuler and their mother, Marty Schuler; five great-grandchildren, Zach and Molly McKee, Amelia and Zander Robinson, and Brady Schuler; two step-grandchildren, Kalya and Justin Phillips; two step great-grandchildren, Cody Phillips and Melissa Kammin; two step great-great-granddaughters, Mylee Kammin and Devyn Dissmeyer; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of 71 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sisters.

Memorials may be made in his honor to Memorial Lutheran Church or Zearing Fire and Rescue and mailed to Shirley Klonglan, 1039 G Ave., Nevada, IA, 50201.
