CHILD DIES ATTEMPTING TO SAVE DOG

DOROTHY MARTIN OF NEAR AMES IS STRUCK BY AUTO

Runs Out Onto Highway West Of Nevada

Attempting to rescue her puppy dog from the heavily-traveled Lincoln highway near the Nevada Brick and Tile company factory west of Nevada, Dorothy Martin, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martin of southeast of Ames, was struck and fatally injured by a car driven by Wanda Goodhue, 20, of Newton.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p. m., Wednesday and the little girl died in the Iowa Sanitarium at Nevada at 1:30 a. m., Thursday. Injuries consisted of a broken right arm and left leg, skull fracture and internal injuries.

No Inquest

Coroner Guy Mills of McCallsburg Thursday ruled that no inquest would be held and that the accident was "unavoidable."

The Martin girl, with her three brothers, Junior, Thomas and Richard, had been visiting at the Clarence Markley place near the brick and tile factory. Playing in a sand pile not far from the road, Dorothy ran out onto the road to get her little dog. Miss Goodhue, who was driving east, reported that she did not see the girl as she came over the hill until it was too late. The dog was killed.

Rushed to Sanitarium

The Martin girl was rushed to the Iowa Sanitarium by Ronald Childs, J. E. Anderson and Dan Morrissey, all of Ames, Iowa highway commission employes, who were working on the road near the scene of the accident. Officials at the sanitarium reported that her injuries were [unreadable] and serious that there was no chance for recovery.

She was born June 9, 1929, in Arkansas. The Martin family moved to a farm southeast of Ames this spring. Surviving are the parents and three brothers, Junion, 12; Richard 10, and Thomas, 2. She was a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ferguson, 1005 Maxwell avenue, and a second cousin of Mrs. Earl Freel, 1525 Duff avenue.

The body was brot to the Duckworth funeral home Thursday morning. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home at 9 a. m. Sunday, with the Rev. Jack Finegan, pastor of the Church of Christ, in charge. Burial will be in the Aurora, Ia. cemetery.
