Special to the Ames Tribune.
CAMBRIDGE — Mrs. Tom Handeland, 80, was burned to death early Wednesday morning in a fire which destroyed her home in the south part of Cambridge.
Neighbors, noticing the fire, reported it to the fire department. They reported seeing Mrs. Handeland, who lived alone, get up and go into the kitchen, where the fire was at its worst. Mrs. Handeland's clothes caught fire and she rushed to a window, where neighbors saw her fall. She was dead from burns and suffocation by the time anyone could reach her.
The fire was believed to have started in a defective flue in the kitchen range.
Mrs. Handeland had lived in Cambridge for many years and was active in the affairs of the Lutheran chuich. Her husband died a number of years ago.
Surviving her are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Olson of Cambridge, and a niece in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Wednesday from the Lutheran church, with the Rev. Peder Buland in charge. Burial was in the Cambridge cemetery.
