Kathryn A. Engel, 94, of Ames, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, at First Congregational Church, 312 W. Main St., in Marshalltown. Lunch will be served at the church following the service. A burial service will be at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, 611 N. Center St., in Marshalltown. For condolences, visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born Kathryn A. Wagaman on Oct. 19, 1914, in Lynnville, she was the daughter of Fred and Ada Wagaman. She was the fifth of eight children, Minerva, Willard, Herbert, Charles, Harris, Claire and Robert. She was the last surviving one. She received a two-year teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) and a bachelor’s degree from Drake University. She taught grade school for 18 years in central Iowa schools. She was married to Paul M. Johnson, a teacher, coach and businessman, who died in 1953. She later married Raymond A. Engel, an executive at Fisher Controls, who died in 1986.

She was an active community leader in Marshalltown, serving on the YMCA Board and being an active member of First Congregational Church, Elmwood Country Club and the Legion Golf Course. She also belonged to local chapters of Theta Chi and PEO.

In Ames, she was a very active supporter of Iowa State University athletics and was named Cy’s Favorite Alum in 1993. She and Raymond also were dedicated to helping the Mechanical Engineering Department, and she continued this support after his death. She received the ISU Honorary Alumna Award in 2005.

Before she became ill, she enjoyed golf and bridge and was a talented creator of needlepoint and knitting projects.

She is survived by her son, Dale A. Johnson and his wife, Janice, of Mahtomedi, Minn.; three granddaughters, Beth Byron, of Portland, Ore., Jean Hornnes, of Lakeville, Minn., and Julie Sexson, of Mahtomedi, Minn.; and seven great- grandchildren.
