THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, January 30, 2009.

Richard Van Horn, 77, of Madrid, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Willow Creek Church of the Open Bible in Ames.

Richard was a ham radio operator and a Korean War veteran serving in the Navy. He enjoyed fishing, building and flying radio controlled planes and woodworking.

He will be missed by his wife of 52 years, Betty, who he always said made him whole; two daughters, Cookie (Dennis) Pennell, of Rock Falls, Ill., and Barbara (Terry) Shaffer, of Phoenix; nine grandchildren, Brandi, Ryan, Sean, Nicole, Rachel, Brittany, Dawn, Randy and Michelle; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Wilma; two daughters, Carolyn Marsh and Bonnie Van Horn; two grandsons, Joey Kasza and Danny White; and one brother, William.

Brooks Funeral Care of Clive is assisting the family with arrangements.
