THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
Donna Ruth Cummins passed sweetly from this life Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, after a long battle with breast cancer, keeping her mind and body intact until near the very end, she blessed many lives. A viewing will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 S. Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the West Jordan Oquirrh Point Stake Center, 6270 W. 7000 S., Salt Lake City, Utah, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Inurnment will take place at Redwood Memorial at a later date.
Donna was born Oct. 6, 1941, in Santa Monica, Calif. She graduated from Arundel High School in Gambrills, Md., in 1959. Donna received her bachelor’s degree in bacteriology in 1978 and her master’s degree in veterinary microbiology in 1989 from Iowa State University. She was employed at the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories before working at the Center for Veterinary Biologics-Inspection and Compliance in 1994. She conducted inspections of domestic and foreign biologics facilities. She developed lifelong friendships that started when she began cleaning test tubes in the lab as a single mother. She and her best friend, Dr. Janet Payeur, traveled the earth together, started scuba diving in their 50s, and worked at H & R block for 11 years. She developed many hobbies and interests including quilting, painting, stained-glass, and wood carving. Donna’s faith grew throughout her life despite many trials. She was a member of the LDS church and developed some of her most precious relationships in the Ames Iowa Ward.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Dan) Mills; grandchildren, Sarah and Silas; her brother, Jim (Dee Dee) Cummins; sister, Maryan Cummins; and mother, Mildred Cummins.
She was preceded in death by her son, David Boschert; and her father, Verus Cummins.
