Kenneth McLaughlin 84, of Ames, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at the Israel Family Hospice House. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Kenneth P. McLaughlin, 84, of Ames, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
Kenneth Partch McLaughlin was born March 15, 1924, in Rock Rapids, to Cyril Martin and Marguerite Alida (Partch) McLaughlin. In 1928, the family moved to Sioux City where he attended the Sioux City school system, graduating from East High School in June 1942. He was a three-year veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving in the South Pacific during World War II until December 1945. He married Darleen Wegher June 14, 1946, in South Sioux City, Neb. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering.
He started working for the Iowa State Highway Commission (Iowa Department of Transportation) in road design in 1950 and spent 37 years in various design and construction engineering positions, retiring in June 1987. He was significantly involved in the design and construction of the Iowa interstate highway systems. He was a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, American Public Works Association, the Iowa Engineering Society and the Anson Marston Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society. He was recognized for his engineering work in both design and construction. He enjoyed his grandchildren, meeting weekly for coffee with other commission retirees and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Darleen; three sons, Michael (Jan), of Norwalk, Gregory (Sue), of Ames, and Scott (Diana), of Boone; seven grandchildren, Shelly (Luke), Matt, Cole, Kyle, Stacey (Tom), Michelle (Chris) and Jennifer; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard, of Cottage Grove, Minn.
Memorial contributions can be made to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
