Alvina Owenson, 95, of Story City, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Bethany Manor Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Randall.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Manor.
Soderstrum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alvina (Thorson) Owenson, 95, of Story City, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Bethany Manor Chapel, with visitation one hour prior to the funeral services. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery north of Randall.
Pearl Alvina Thorson was born Aug. 29, 1913, to Thor and Valinda (Walker) Thorson in Blue Earth, Minn. Alvina grew up in Story City and the Blue Earth areas. She married Nomer G. Owenson March 30, 1936. They lived and farmed on the family farm south of Randall. They raised three children. She was a longtime member of Elim Lutheran Church in Randall.
Alvina also worked for Collegiate Manufacturing Company and for the Veterinary Medicine Department at Iowa State University for 18 years. Her greatest joy was spending time volunteering at Bethany Manor. She spent countless hours mending for residents, setting up quilts, and weaving rugs. In 1998 she received the Governor's Office in Volunteerism Award for 25 years of service.
She also spent several years working with the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, bringing them clothing and quilts. They made her an honorary member of the tribe in recognition of her love and support.
Alvina was very creative and had many hobbies including quilting, weaving, Norwegian rosemaling, sewing, cake decorating, and ceramics. She loved her family and enjoyed cooking and entertaining.
She is survived by two children, Noel (Sharon) Owenson, of Huxley, and Kenyon (Deb) Owenson, of Zion, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nomer, on Aug. 18, 1983; one infant son, Norman, in 1937; and one daughter, Thelma, in 2007.
Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is handling the arrangements.
