THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, November 14, 2008.June 8, 1923-Nov. 12, 2008
Elsie M. Helms joined our Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer for four years. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Madrid Home. Services will be at 10:30 am. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, also at the funeral home.
Elsie was born June 8, 1923, and attended a one-room schoolhouse for her early years. She graduated from Ladora High School in 1941. She met the love of her life, Charles Helms, while on rollerskates in 1942, and married him a year later on June 6, 1943. They moved to Kearney, Neb., in 1944, where they both worked at the State TB Hospital and then to Gothenburg, Neb., when the hospital closed.
Elsie was a diehard Nebraska Cornhhuskers fan and an avid Cubs fan, never giving up on the hope they would make it to the World Series. She was an experienced bowler and had been to the Senior Nationals twice, taking third in 1989 and again in 2006 at the age of 82. Her high series was 596 with her highest game being 256. She loved to play cards and dominoes. She also enjoyed playing pool and had the great distinction of being champion many times at the senior center in Gothenburg, Neb. After the passing of her husband, Chuck Sr., she moved to Huxley in 1998 to be closer to family. Anyone who knew her will remember her as a great listener and a true friend.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Jr. (Pat) and Donald (Susan); two sisters, Floris Swender and Donna (Frank) Robinson; three brothers, Wayne (Millie) Carlson, Robert (Betty) Carlson and Tom Carlson; five grandchildren, Chad Helms, Brandi Helms, Wade Helms, Josh Helms (Sara Field) and Meagan (Mark) Doebele; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden Helms and Dylan Helms.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Sr.; two brothers, Harold Carlson and Edwin Carlson; one sister, Marilyn McCammon; and one grandchild, Tyler Helms.
