Funeral services for Mervin Burnett Brooks, 58, of rural Nevada were held at Central Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11. Rev. Gehrald Riesen officiated and Mrs. Arlene Huhn was organist. Gary Handsaker was soloist.
Burial was in the Nevada Cemetery with Blake Elliott and Al McNary presenting the flag to the family. Pall bearers were Willard Borts, Richard Couser, Jim Frevert, Elmer Paul, Floyd Twedt and Gene Walston. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Carol Burnett and Mrs. Donna Ryerson.
Mervin Brooks was born October 19, 1920 to David and Jennie Brooks. He was baptized in the Central Presbyterian Church in which he served as an elder and on the board of trustees. He was past commander of the V.F.W. and belonged to the American Legion. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Ames. He graduated from Milford Township School and on May 31, 1941 was married to Virginia Heitkamp of Boone.
Mervin served his country in the Armed Forces; upon returning to civilian life he became a farmer.
After a 10 month illness he passed away Sunday, April 8 in the Story County Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; daughter, Mrs. Roger (Linda) Lawrence; sons, Ronald of Boone, Donald of Nevada, Loren of Brandon, Florida, and Kevin, a student of Iowa State University. Also surviving are six grandchildren; two brothers, Lester and Virgil of Nevada; three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Jacobson of Nevada, Mrs. Harold (Genevieve) Myrland of Austin, Minnesota and Mrs. Donald (Isabelle) Hillis of Story City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, LaVern.---from the Nevada Journal April 23, 1979
