E. R. Meredith, Highway Staff Member, Dies
E. R. Meredith, 821 Ridgewood avenue, assistant engineer of design at the Iowa Highway commission, dropped dead at 2:45 p. m. Tuesday in his office, apparently from a sudden heart attack.
Mr. Meredith, a commissioned officer during the World war, has been with the highway commission for the past 15 years.
He is survived by Mrs. Meredith, who has been active in political affairs for several years and is at the present time chairman of the state old age pension commission.

V. F. W. Legion Will Be In Charge Of Services
Military funeral services for Edward Randolph Meredith, 52, 821 Ridgewood avenue, who dropped dead at his desk at the Iowa highway commission office Tuesday afternoon, will be held at 10 a m. Thursday in the Adams chapel. Ames posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will conduct the services.
The offices of the commission will be closed Thursday morning while employees attend the final services for Mr. Meredith, who was popularly known as "Ted." The body will be cremated.
Mr. Meredith died of a sudden heart attack at 2:45 p. m. Tuesday while talking with a member of a highway survey party. Meredith, as assistant engineer of design for the commission, was head of all survey parties operating in the state.
Urged To Rest
He had been in Carroll in the morning and upon returning to his home for a few minutes, was advised by Mrs. Meredith to lie down and rest awhile, as he had been suffering from heart trouble for some time. Mr. Meredith stated that he would return to the office for a short time and come home early to rest, but died suddenly while at work. The entire staff at the hihway commission was dismissed shortly after word of Mr. Meredith's death was received by the employees.
Mr. Meredith was born March 1, 1883 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was graduated from Swarthmore colege, Swarthmore, Pa., as a civil engineer. While in college he was active in athletics, and he continued his athletic interests as a hobby the rest of his life, serving as official in many games and taking interest in the development of the football team at Iowa State college.

After graduation he was engaged in railroad construction work in the east, until he joined the American forces in the World war. He went overseas in 1917, but was sent back early in 1918 to serve as an instructor at Camp Dodge, where he remained until the armistice. While in France his hearing was impaired by the continual sound of exploding shells.
After being discharged from the service with a captaincy, Mr. Meredith joined the Iowa highway commission in 1919. He was active in the affairs of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served as state V. F. W. commander in 1927.
Surviving him is his wife, Mrs. Meredith, chairman of the Iowa old age assistance commission. Mrs. Meridith's brother, Eugene McGuire Des Moines, came Tuesday afternoon to take charge of the arrangements for services.
