George Hilling Alfred was born in Belmound Co. Ohio, February 13, 1821 and died at his home in Story Co., Iowa, September 16, 1904 at 7:45 a. m. at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 2 days. He was one of a family of 12 children all of whom have gone before except one sister who lives in California. At the age of 21 he united with the Baptist church at Enon, Ohio. Coming west he united with the Squaw Creek Baptist church in Story Co. which merged into the First Baptist church of Ames of which he remained a member until his death.
When 24 years of age he was joined in marriage with Miss Anna Milton. To this union were born two sons and one daughter. The wife, daughter and one son having deceased. He was again married to Miss Nancy Arrowsmith, Dec. 12, 1861 who survives him after having lived together 43 years. To this union were born three sons and three daughters all of whom survive except one, the eldest son.
He has lived on the present farm for forty-two years.
Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday Sept. 18, 1904 at 10:30 a. m. conducted by Rev. S. H. Mitchell of Ames who had become his pastor nearly 35 years ago, continuing in that relation about 5 years and maintaining an intimate acquaintance and friendship through all these intervening years.
A very large procession of relatives, neighbors and citizens of Story county followed the remains to the cemetery at Pleasant Grove church where interment took place.---from the Ames Intelligencer 10/6/1904
Mr. Alfred's second wife was Miss Nancy Arrasmith which is printed as Arrowsmith in the newspaper.
