Rodger Arends, 75, of Story City, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services are pending with Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Rodger Arends, 75, of Story City, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City, with Rev. Thomas Reuss officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Hill Cemetery in Stanhope.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Rodger Arends was born March 18, 1933, in Webster City, to Arthur O. and Verna Mae (Read) Arends. He graduated from Stanhope High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. He married Martha Ann Arendts April 18, 1959, in Stanhope.

He was a lifelong farmer in the Stanhope area. He was a DeKalb seed corn dealer and sold Dixon lawnmowers for many years, and owned and operated "The Christmas Stocking" gift shop in Story City for 23 years.

He moved to Story City in 1997. He was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church, member of Kohinoor Masonic Lodge 576 for more than 50 years, former church board chairman and board member and member of Farmer State Bank Board. He enjoyed his retirement in Story City, playing golf and poker with the guys, visiting over a cup of coffee and having breakfast with his friends. He loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Arends, of Story City; two children, Curtis Jay Arends, of Runnells, and Julie Ann Bennett, of Runnells; one brother, Clint (Lila) Arends, of Stanhope; one sister, Cleo Henderson, of Fort Dodge; one sister-in-law, Faye Arends, of Gilbert; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew and Matthew Bennett; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, Rodney, in 1996.
