Velma Marie Hess, 92 of Colo died on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 16 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.

Velma was born on July 23, 1916 in Colo to Henry W. and Bessie A. (Dolph) Granger. She graduated from Colo High School in 1934 and Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. On October 25, 1946, Velma married Morton B. Hess at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a member of the Rhodes Rebekah Lodge #362 I.O.O.F. and the Dalton Aid. Velma enjoyed fishing, reading, playing dominos, solving cross word puzzles and word finds.

Velma is survived by a brother, Thomas Ray (Berdina) Granger of Colo and nieces and nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mort on March 7, 2000, a daughter Jane in 1967, 2 brothers, Forrest on March 3, 1991 and Donald on March 26, 1998, sister Lois Granger on December 23, 1927, nephew Stanley Granger, and a great nephew Shad Davie.

A memorial fund has been established in Velma's name.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada was entrusted with Velma and her family.
