Carl Asmus "Pete" Benning, age 83, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri passed away at his home on Thursday, August 14, 2008.

He was born on October 3, 1924 in Dixon County, Nebraska, the son of Asmus Carl and Margaret May (Johnson) Benning. On May 18, 1947, he was married to Verna Mae Locke in Clarion, Iowa. She survives of the home.

Carl served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He had worked as a tool crib operator for John Deere Des Moines Works, Ankeny, Iowa. Carl and Verna made their home in Chillicothe after moving from Meadville in 1988. Prior to living in Meadville, they had lived in Halfway, Missouri and Cambridge, Iowa. Carl enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, hunting, fishing and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Verna of the home; one son, Kevin Benning and wife, Cherryl of Slater, Iowa; one daughter, Karla Kinzle and husband, Jerald of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren, Michelle Kinzle and Jennifer Kinzle of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jessica Benning of Newton, Iowa, Cassandra Laas of Iowa City, Iowa and Amanda Benning of Slater, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Devon Perkins of Shenandoah, Iowa, Halle Dieken, Zackary Dieken, Khilynne Dieken, Megan Kinzle and Elexia Stuck, all of Lincoln, Nebraska and Cameron Lentz of Newton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson, Dominique Meador.

Funeral services were held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in Utica Cemetery, Utica, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation or to the Mt. Olive Methodist Church and may be left at the funeral home or be mailed to the Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri.
