AMES WOMEN FLY TO BESIDE OF MOTHER
Flying in a chartered plane, Mrs. P. S. Shearer, 8ll Ash avenue, and Miss Frances Kelley, instructor in home management at Iowa State college, successfully reached. Kansas City before dark Wednesday and the bedside of their mother, Mrs. B. C. Kelley, by train from Kansas City this morning, according to a telegram received by Prof. P. S. Shearer, head of the college animal husbandry department, from his wife this morning.
The two women decided Wednesday to fly to Kansas City so as to make a 10 o'clock night train to Tulsa, immediately after receiving the message telling of their mother's illness.
Calling the Yellowcab Airways at Des Moines, arrangements were made for a plane to come to Ames. Local aviation enthusiasts, headed by J. H. Ainsworth, president of the Ames chamber of commerce, tramped over the American Legion airport south of the city and marked with flags that area where there was the least snow so the pilot could land safely. The landing and takeoff was made without accident about 3 p. m.
The plane was not equipped for night flying and the pilot was rather uncertain as to the chances of making Kansas City.
