THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, August 24, 2008.

Phillip L. Lobaugh, 79, died quietly the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at the Madrid Home, just a week shy of his 80th birthday. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 5, at the Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Phil was born Aug. 27, 1928, on the family farm northeast of Nevada, the son of Marlie Orion and Geneva (Sylvester) Lobaugh. He attended Nevada High School and graduated in 1946 before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Lesta Sorensen on Dec. 25, 1950, in Benton, Ark., before returning to Camp Pendleton, Calif. At the end of his military service, Phil and Lesta began farming on an acreage just east of the family homestead.

Phil stayed active during his years on the farm, raising crops, animals and five children. Many people in town benefited from his green thumb when his garden would over-produce tomatoes, watermelons and cantaloupes. After retiring from farming, he had a successful framing business and enjoyed exhibiting at the annual ABWA fall craft show. He loved having coffee and sharing stories with his men's coffee groups in Nevada. Phil's 10 grandchildren and great-grandson always brought a smile to his face.

Phil is survived by his wife, Lesta, of Nevada; two sons: Kirk (Kellie) Lobaugh, of El Paso, Texas, and Eric (Diane) Lobaugh, of Boone, Iowa; three daughters: LeAnn (Clark) Howland, of Des Moines, Iowa, Cheryl (Shawn) Jacobson, of Olney, Md., and Debra (Alan) Weltha, of Ames, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Clifford and Donald.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
