Harold Schnormeier, 75, of Ames, died today at Israel Family Hospice House. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Harold Eugene Schnormeier, 75, of Ames, died Thursday, July 17, at Israel Family Hospice House after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames. Inurnment will be at a later date in Hubbard Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Harold Eugene Schnormeier was born July 30, 1932, at home in Hubbard, to Gustav and Esther (Handt) Schnormeier. He graduated from Hubbard High School in 1950 and attended Iowa State College and also Des Moines Capital City Commercial College, where he met his future wife, Dorothy.

On Dec. 4, 1953, he married Dorothy Ann Stevenson, of near Nevada. Their first 12 years of marriage were spent farming at Hubbard. In 1965, they moved their family to Ames where they owned and operated Walnut Motel for five years, then Heaton's Floor Covering for 12 years. Harold briefly retired, then later partnered with family, owning and operating a pizza business for 12 years in Des Moines. Once fully retired, Harold pursued his passion of collecting, buying and selling antiques. From his youth, he also was known for his pool-playing abilities and participated in numerous amateur eight-ball tournaments nationwide. He thoroughly enjoyed life. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Marilyn Schnormeier, of Dallas; one son, Alan (Nancy) Schnormeier, of Plattsmouth, Neb.; three grandsons, Blake (Bailey) Schnormeier, of Creston, Todd (Cheryl) Gilleland, of Red Oak, and Jason Gilleland, of Red Oak; four great-grandchildren, Austin Schnormeier, Alexa Gilleland, Hunter Gilleland and Macie Gilleland; one sister, Verna LeVear, of Urbandale; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents.
