Jay C Ferguson, 89, died June 11, in Melrose, Minn. A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, June 14, at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Minn., with burial in Saint Michael's Cemetery. He received military honors during his burial by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Jay was born March 26, 1919, in Nevada, to Alexander and Blanche (Bates) Ferguson. He married Irvia Jochumsen, and they raised three daughters together, Jayanne Jones, of Nevada, Donna Bahr, of Granite Falls, Minn., and Marlene Garrey, of Ames.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving our country in the Southwest Pacific from Dec. 3, 1942 to Jan. 6, 1946.
He was hired as an Ames police officer May 23, 1949. He was appointed to sergeant Jan. 1, 1960, and then to captain of the Ames Police Department Sept. 9, 1961. He retired from the department July 15, 1970.
He was a sharpshooter competitor for both the Police Association and the National Rifle Association. In 1964, he received the police Midwest Regional Championship for Rapid Fire and also the Regional Championship for the National Rifle Association pistol tournament. He was awarded many first and second place medals and trophies for his expert marksmanship throughout the Midwest in the '60s.
Besides his exemplary service as a law enforcement officer to the citizens of Ames, he also worked on a part-time basis with his brother, Leone, as a carpenter.
He loved to sing and was in his church choir for many years. He also liked cutting wood, reading and studying. He was a mathematician and enjoyed tutoring others in honing their math skills.
Renate Mussmann was Jay's second wife. They had two children, John Ferguson, of Dan Ville, Ky., and Heidi Justison, of Ortonville, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Renate, of Belgrade, Minn.; four daughters; one son; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Darlene LaVan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
