Hubert Allen Hanson was born April 25, 1921, to Hans and Elsie (Baldwin) Hanson on the family farm near Radcliffe. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Methodist Church in Radcliffe. He graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1942. He was sent to New Zealand in October 1942, where he saw combat duty in Guadalcanal, Gilbert Islands and Tarawa. In 1944, while he was in Hawaii on light duty due to malaria, he was an escort for President Roosevelt. He was discharged from service in October 1945.

He married LaVonne Johnson, of Story City, June 3, 1945. After he returned from the war, he farmed in the Radcliffe and Jewell areas. He retired in 1983 and continued to do seasonal work for the agronomy department at Iowa State University. He was an active member of Bethesda Lutheran Church of Jewell, where he was trustee and served on the church council. He was a member of the Jewell Lions Club and active in the American Legion where he served as treasurer for several years. He was a devout Christian, loving husband, father and grandfather.

His family was his greatest joy. He and LaVonne were their biggest fans at their sporting events and activities. Together, they encouraged their children and grandchildren's participation and success in all their endeavors.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, LaVonne; three sons, Robert (Sharon) Hanson, of Omaha, Neb., Randy (Lori) Hanson, of Circle Pines, Minn., and Ronald, of Woodward; and two daughters, Pat (Dennis) Samuelson, of Jewell, and Pam (Arlon) Samuelson, of Stanhope. He was so proud of his grandchildren, Scott and Anthony (Barb) Samuelson, Abby and Ali Hanson, Christopher, Matthew and Joshua Hanson, and Sara, Sandra and Casey Samuelson. He also is survived by two brothers, Leo (Romaine) Hanson, of Spirit Lake, and Richard (Vicki) Hanson, of Sacramento, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Betty.

Memorials may be given to his church, Jewell Fire and Rescue, the Jewell Lions Club or the American Legion Post of Jewell.
