Kelley, Feb. 7 - Funeral services for the late Guy William Hughes of Kelley were held Friday afternoon, February 2nd, at 2 o'clock at the Adams Funeral Chapel at Ames, with the Reverend Alfred Barker, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. The text of the sermon was taken from John 14th chapter, "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me". Two solos, "Abide With Me" and "Saved By Grace", were sung, the former being the favorite hymn of the deceased. There were many beautiful floral offerings, a silent tribute of love and respect. Pall bearers included C. L. Accola, C. W. Person, George Fuller, O. J. Brendeland, Merlin Soderstrum and George Puffet. Interment was in the Ames cemetery.
Guy William Hughes, son of Sarah Ann and William Swayze Hughes, was born May 6, 1890, near Pleasant Grove, nine miles northeaast of Ames, and passed away January 29, 1945, at the age of 54 years, 8 months and 23 days. He moved to Kelley with his parents in 1900, to a farm two miles west of town. He attended the Ames High school and was a charter member of the first Kelley band.
Upon the death of his father in 1911, he and his mother remained on the farm until 1926 when they moved to Perry where they lived until 1932 when they moved to a farm near Napier. His mother passed away in 1935. He cared for her devotedly during her last illness. He was forced to leave the farm owing to ill health following his mother's death. During the past three years he has been employed on the late Guy Walker farm near Ames, where he met death accidently on Monday.
Survivors are a brother, Charles Hughes, of near Story City; a sister, Mrs. Ralph Carroll of Kelley, five nieces and three nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
By his friendly, kindly manner Guy won for himself many true and devoted friends, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The entire community mourns his untimely departure and extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved in their hour of sorrow.
