Eda Sowers, 94, formerly of Story City, died Friday, Feb. 28, at Augusta Area Nursing Home in Augusta, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City, with burial in Center Cemetery, rural Story City.
Eda Ane Sowers, was born Sept. 14, 1908, near Story City, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Springman) Johnson. As a child she was baptized at Grace Evangelical Church. She attended Center Country School and graduated from Story City High School. After high school, she worked as a cook at Cedar Falls Hospital in Cedar Falls. She married Albert Wilber Sowers July 22, 1928, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed in Story and Boone counties. In addition to farming, Eda was employed as a cook at Bathany Manor Nursing Home, Story City Memorial Hospital and Story City Bowling Alley. Eda was very active in farming and community activities. She served as a 4-H leader, a member of the Boone County Farm Bureau, the Story City Federated Women's Club and the Center Cemetery Society. She enjoyed her involvememt with the Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. She served as an officer in the United Methodist Women, and served many yers as the coordinator of the church quilting project. She enjoyed cooking and canning, games, gardening, wild flowers, birds and quilting with her family and friends.
To be closer to her daughter Ann and her family, Eda moved to Augusta, Wis., in September 1988, and then entered the Augusta Area Nursing Home in May 1999.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Anderson of East Lansing, Mich., and Ann and Richard Deaton of Augusta, Wis,; one brother, Willard Johnson of Walnut; 13 grandchildren, Steven Anderson and Mary Reylund, Susan and Ben Anderson- Ray, Elizabeth and Duane Anderson- Lee, David and Jane Anderson, Alan Deaton (Kim Schwartz), Denise and Scott Tolzman, Dianne and Rick Vielhuber, Debbie and Keith Kitchen, Heather Sowers, Dwight Sowers, Brent Sower, Renah Sowers and Bradley Sowers; and 15 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Dec. 23, 1979; one son, Paul Sowers in August 2002; and one son-in-law, Morris Anderson in April 2002.
A visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.
Memorials can be given to Augusta Area Nursing Home or Grace United Methodist Church, in care of the Grace Quilters.
