God called his angel, Doris Powers-Cherry, to be with him Friday, April 4. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Story City Municipal Cemetery.
Doris was born Nov. 23, 1943, in Story City, to Wilmer and Julia (Haugland) Jewell. She was the loving companion and spouse of Larry Cherry for more than 32 years, and a wonderful mother to her son, Chris Powers, of San Diego, and to Larry's daughter, Tammie Gillette, of Sunnyvale, Calif., and his son, Jeff Cherry, of Stockton, Calif.
She was a long time employee of IBM in its accounting function, before breast cancer struck her in 2005, forcing her resignation. She also battled brain cancer since 2007 and lost her battle with liver cancer.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; son, Chris (Jackie) Powers; stepdaughter, Tammie (Greg) Gillette; stepson, Jeff Cherry; eight beloved grandchildren; four brothers, Charles (Virginia) Jewell, of Jewell, Carroll (Carol) Jewell, of Story City, Jerry Jewell, of Grover, Mo., and Don (Sue) Jewell, of Gainesville, Va.; two sisters, the Rev. Nancy Jewell, of Baudette, Minn., and Anna Jewell, of Bay City, Mich.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Jewell.
Soderstrum Funeral Home of Story City is assisting the family.
