Avan F. Bates, 84, of Boone, died Sunday, March 30, at Boone County Hospital, following a long illness. Per his wishes, he was cremated. The memorial service will be at a later date.

Avan Floyd Bates was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Ames, the son of Arthur and Lois Wills Bates. He married Alice Buffington Dec. 23, 1985, in Jefferson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with those he loved. He also enjoyed John Wayne movies, old westerns and old country music. He worked in the maintenance department in the power plant at Iowa State University.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice; one son, Jerry Bates, of Florida; three daughters, Ava Wolfe and Twilene Augustus, both of Wichita, Kan., and Sheila McGuire, of Bettendorf; two stepdaughters, Donna Cervene and Robin Roths, both of Jewell; one stepson, Doug Bartleson, of Jewell; one brother, Don Bates, of Chilton, Wis.; one sister, Jenny Milton, of Cañyon City, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
