Merle W. Gilroy, 80, died Friday, March 14, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were today at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson, with burial in Jefferson Cemetery.

Merle W. Gilroy was born April 13, 1927, in Jefferson. He attended school in Jefferson until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. During World War II, he served on a destroyer in the Pacific.

He married Juanita Moore, of Glidden, on March 13, 1946. Longtime Jefferson residents, they operated several businesses over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Juanita; two daughters, Kathleen (Kent) Woods and Karen (Lynn) Eubank, both of Ames; one son, Chris (Patricia) Gilroy, of Story City; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
