Ray Gene Barber Sr., 71, of Ames, died Monday, March 10, at home under hospice care. A gathering of friends and family will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Ray Barber Sr. was born Aug. 11, 1936, in Clio, to Evan Ray and Frances (Honn) Barber. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. He married Shirley Keeney Dec. 5, 1957.
He worked for H and F builders for 13 years and then was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Ames, retiring after 25 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 37 in Ames.
His special interests were cooking and barbecuing for his family, gardening, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Barber, of Ames; two sons, Lonnie Barber and J.R. Barber, both of Ames; one daughter, June Ann Schmalzried, of Colo; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn (Lester) Krieger, of Nevada; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Hevlin, of Corydon; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Hevlin.
