THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, February 8, 2008.

June 18, 1935-Feb. 7, 2008

Glenn Virgil Mathis, 72, of Nevada, died Thursday, Feb. 7, at home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada, with Pastor Ted Welch officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Roland Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.

Glenn Virgil Mathis was born June 18, 1935, in Colo, to Robert Lloyd and Martha Lucille (Robinson) Mathis. He married Jessie Louise Corbin June 9, 1962, in Roland.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army (three years) and the U.S. Navy (four years). He was a 48-year (PUFL) member of the American Legion Post 307 in Roland and the Legion's 40 & 8.

He was a painter by trade and retired in 1997. He enjoyed playing cards, putting together jigsaw puzzles and watching his grandchildren compete in sports.

He was considered very patriotic for his service to his country and the American Legion.

He was a loving husband, father and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie, of Nevada; two sons, Michael, of Basin, Wyo., and Kenneth, of Des Moines; one daughter, Marla (Tommy) Chance, of Zearing; two brothers, Robert (Carmin), of Puerto Rico, and Samuel (Clarice), of Story City; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; aunts, uncles, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a foster sister, Opal Mortvedt.

Memorials may be made in honor of Glenn to the American Legion Post 307 in Roland.
