THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, February 6, 2008.

Albert N. Brouwer, 83, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres, Fla. A memorial service was held Jan. 28 at Anderson Funeral Home in Lehigh Acres.

Albert N. Brouwer was born in 1924 in Arnhem, Holland. He was unable to complete his college education because he was captured by the Nazis and forced to work in coal mines during World War II. He left war-ravaged Holland to seek his fortune in Haiti. From there, he moved to the Dominican Republic, where he met and later married Alma Horton in 1952. The couple ran a boarding house in Santo Domingo for three years until he took a job with the Gordon Fennell Company in Cedar Rapids as the export manager.

The family lived in Atkins for eight years while he continued to work as an importer/exporter. For at least 10 years, he had his own business called Corwill International. It was named for his children, Corry and Willy.

In 1971, he and Alma returned to Santo Domingo so he could be the business manager for his brother, Wilhelm's, construction company. He worked there until he retired in 1990. His wife, Alma, died in 1991.

In 2002, he married Emperatriz "Margarita" Maria, and they resided in the Dominican Republic.

He was very cosmopolitan. He spoke five languages and traveled extensively throughout the world. He also loved to study the history of World War II. He shared a moment on the big screen with Al Pacino in the movie, "Godfather II," playing a businessman who passed a solid gold telephone to Michael Corleone.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Corry (Roger) Bertelsen, of Ames; one son, William (Julie) Brouwer, of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.

Memorials can be sent to his daughter, Corry Brouwer Bertelsen, 1813 Meadowlane Ave., Ames, IA, 50010, to be distributed by First Christian Church for new church starts in Latin America.
