Andrew P. Nelson, 84, of Story City, died on Friday, Jan. 11, at his son's home in Fort Collins, Colo. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Saint Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Andrew P. Nelson was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Yankton, S.D., to Andrew Jorgensen and Clara Olson Nelson. He attended elementary schools in Galva, Bronson and Lawton before moving to Story City, where he graduated from the Story City High School in 1941. After returning from service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he graduated from Iowa State University in industrial economics in 1950. He married Trudy King June 11, 1950, at Capitol Hill Christian Church in Des Moines. He was employed as a systems analyst with an insurance company in Des Moines before joining A. J. Nelson and Sons excavating and drainage business in Story City in 1952.
He was active in many organizations. He was president of St. Petri Lutheran Church for three years and served three years on the church council; served for many years on the Story City Council; was a 60+ year member of the American Legion, Post 59 in Story City; a 60+ year member of the Story City Lions Club, earning a lifetime achievement award in 1990 and the Melvin Jones Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
He was a scout leader, Story City ambassador, member of GCC and Story City Development Corporation. He twice ran for the Iowa Legislature and once for Story County supervisor. He was also a member of Kohinoor Lodge and the Shriners.
He served in the European Theater in World War II and was in combat the cold winter of 1944 in Marseille, France and Germany. After combat and a short time at Heidelberg University in Germany, he served for a year as an MP in Bremen, Germany.
He greatly enjoyed poetry and memorized many poems and often recited them to his family.
He is survived by his wife Trudy; one son, Eric, and beloved daughter-in-law, and their four children, Angela (Matt) Snyder, Victoria, Talia, and Kathryn Snyder; Alexa (James) Wittler and Micah and Zoe Wittler; AdriElle (Aaron) Hupp and Michael Nelson; Sue and Marv Braland and their children Ann and Scott; a host of other nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law Marcia King.
A memorial fund has been established.
Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is in charge of arrangements.
