Benton Wilson Buttrey, 88, of Ames, died Sunday, Dec. 30, at Mary Greeley Hospital, in Ames. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Platte Funeral Chapel, Platte, S.D. A committal service will be in Dunlap Methodist Cemetery. Platte Funeral Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Benton Wilson Buttrey, the youngest of six children, was born March 25, 1919, in Craigmont, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Southwest Pacific. Upon his return, he enrolled in the University of Idaho and went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees. He continued his education, earning a doctorate degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He then accepted a position as professor of Zoology at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.

He married Esther B. Knutson July 25, 1961. In the early 1960s, they relocated to Ames, where he continued his teaching at Iowa State University.

Many students will remember him as a kind and helpful teacher. He also was involved in assisting a number of foreign students during his several years on the faculty. He always will be remembered as a very loving husband and a very kind and patient man.

Those honored for having shared in his life include his wife, Esther, of Ames; his brother-in-law, Dwight Knutson and wife, Clara, of Platte, S.D., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
