July 30, 1938-Dec. 24, 2007
Thelma Virginia (Owenson) Smuck, 69, of Story City, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, to be with her Lord and Savior on Christmas Eve, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and a sudden, difficult battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Randall.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Thelma Virginia Owenson was born July 30, 1938, to Nomer G. and Alvina (Thorson) Owenson. She attended Randall High School and graduated in 1956. In 1961, she married Mike Smuck and had three children and several foster children she cared for deeply. During that time, she enjoyed providing day care in her home and playing the organ for church services in Story City.
She worked for several hotels in Ames after her divorce in 1980. She greatly enjoyed meeting many new people and touched the lives of many who thought of her as a second mother.
After she retired, she moved to Story City to be near her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, and she gave unprecedented meaning to the word grandma.
She is survived by three children, Wayne Smuck, of Story City, Lana Purdue, of Gilbert, and Tanya Smuck, of Story City; seven grandchildren, Breanna Smuck, of Story City, Logan and Markie Purdue, of Gilbert, and Cody, Cheyenne and Shelby Sigler and Jesse Archeske, of Story City; her mother, Alvina Owenson, of Story City; two brothers, Noel (Sharon) Owenson, of Huxley, and Kenyon (Sue) Owenson, of Zion, Ill; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Nomer Owenson; and an infant brother, Norman Owenson.
