James "Jim" Roland Smith, 54 of Des Moines died on Friday, December 7 at his home. Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 14 at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada with Pastor David R. Burling officiating.

Jim was born on August 18, 1953 in Emmetsburg, IA to Roland A. and Norma Jean (Popp) Smith. He was a 1972 graduate of Nevada High School. Jim had been employed by Williams Cylinder Head in Nevada. On April 12, 2003, he married Cari Knock in Des Moines. Jim loved being with family and fishing.

Jim is survived by his mother, Jean Smith of Nevada; a son Robert James Smith of Ames; a daughter, Jessica K. Hill of Boone; 2 brothers, Steven (Sherri) Smith of Nevada and Darrel Smith of Webster City; 2 sisters, Nancy (Dennis) Weuve of Nevada and Denise (Don) Sadler of Hartley; 2 grandchildren, Cody James and Jessica Darlene Hill.

Jim was preceded in death by his father on April 22, 1987, both grandparents, Bert and Marie Smith and Anna and Rudy Popp.

Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services has been entrusted with Jim and his family.
