James "Jim" Roland Smith, 54, of Des Moines, died Friday, Dec. 7, at home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada, with Pastor David R. Burling officiating.
James "Jim" Roland Smith was born Aug. 18, 1953, in Emmetsburg, to Roland A. and Norma Jean (Popp) Smith. He was a 1972 graduate of Nevada High School. He had been employed by Williams Cylinder Head in Nevada.
He married Cari Knock April 12, 2003, in Des Moines. He loved being with family and fishing.
He is survived by his mother, Jean Smith, of Nevada; one son, Robert James Smith, of Ames; one daughter, Jessica K. Hill, of Boone; two brothers, Steven (Sherri) Smith, of Nevada, and Darrel Smith, of Webster City; two sisters, Nancy (Dennis) Weuve, of Nevada, and Denise (Don) Sadler, of Hartley; and two grandchildren, Cody James and Jessica Darlene Hill.
He was preceded in death by his father April 22, 1987, and both grandparents, Bert and Marie Smith and Anna and Rudy Popp.
Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
