Gordon Bultena, 72, of Ames, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Israel Family Hospice House. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. A gathering of friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care in Ames.

Gordon Louis Bultena was born July 3, 1935, in Jerome, Idaho, the son of Louis and Beatrice (Sturges) Bultena. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College High School in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1957. He married Carolyn Pennock June 15, 1957, in Davenport. He then earned a master's degree in 1959 and a doctorate in 1963 from the University of Minnesota. In 1963, they moved to Madison, Wis., where he was on staff before moving to Iowa State University in 1969. He was a professor of sociology, teaching rural sociology, environmental sociology and social impact assessment before retiring in 1997.

He was involved in many organizations, including Zambia Project Advisory Committee, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Rural Sociological Society, American Sociological Society, International Association for Impact Assessment, Natural Resource Council and Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. He was major professor of nine master's students and 13 doctorate students. He received honors and citations from Kappa Delta Phi, National Honor Society of Education and National Academy of Leisure Sciences and received a faculty citation from the ISU Alumni Association. He belonged to Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. He enjoyed camping, canoeing and Lake Vermillion in Northern Minnesota, where he and his family spent many summers.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of Ames; one daughter, Laurie (Steve) Henry, of Nevada; two sons, Steve (Monica), of Cannon Falls, Minn., and Kevin (Michele), of Webster City; and seven grandchildren, Scott, Kyle and Eric Henry, and Alexander, Nicholas, Cassidy and Tyler Bultena.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joyce McGee.

Memorials may be directed to Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames or Mary Greeley Foundation for Israel Family Hospice House of Ames.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
