Thomas G. Anderson, 63, formerly of Ames, died Saturday, Oct. 27, at home in Land O'Lakes, Fla. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin, Ill., with a graveside service under the auspices of Michael's Funeral Home of Schaumburg, Ill.
Thomas G. Anderson was born Nov. 6, 1943, in Ames, the son of Merlin H. and Carrie H. Anderson. He was a 1961 graduate of Ames High School and a 1966 graduate of Iowa State University, where he had a double major in aeronautical and mechanical engineering. After graduating from Army OCS school, he served in Korea and as a captain in Vietnam. He then obtained a law degree at the University of Tulsa and became a patent attorney.
He worked for several corporations, including Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, and then joined the Law Department for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Argonne National Laboratory, Ill. His career there as a patent attorney included negotiating grants to ISU and to the University of Iowa and other national laboratories nationwide. He was a member of the American and Illinois Bar Associations.
He retired to Land O'Lakes, Fla., in December 2005, after 18 years at Argonne.
He is survived by his wife, Cari, of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; one daughter, Cathleen Mayeski, of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Charles Schroeder and his wife, Dorothy, of Tampa; granddaughters, Alyssa, Brianna and Emma Schroeder, of Tampa; one brother, Dr. Joe M. Anderson and his wife, Joyce, of Gallipolis, Ohio; one sister, Nancy K. Anderson, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two nieces, Nancy J. Anderson, of Arlington, Va., and Julee Brown, of Bainsbridge, Pa.; and a nephew, Robert Elston, of Valencia, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Leigh Schroeder.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
