Rozella DuBois, of Story City and formerly of McCallsburg, died today at Bethany Manor in Story City. Services are pending with Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Rozella B. DuBois, 100, of Story City, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Rozella Beatrice Olson was born Feb. 2, 1907, in Randall, and grew up on a farm 2 1/2 miles north of Radcliffe. Her parents were Martin (M.G.) and Lizzie (Henderson) Olson, and her three brothers were Floyd, Kenneth and Orlin Olson. Sad to say, Lizzie died of a ruptured appendix when Rozella was only 7 years old. In her later years, Rozella would talk of waving goodbye to her Mom as she headed off by train to the hospital in Des Moines and then never ever seeing her again.

Rozella and her brothers attended school in Radcliffe. One clear remembrance is of going to school by horse and buggy. The horses were foaming at the mouth by the time they arrived at the livery stable in Radcliffe. After graduating from Radcliffe High School, Rozella attended nursing school at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. While in nursing school, she married Dr. Gordon DuBois. They kept their marriage a secret, however, because nursing students were not allowed to continue school if it was found out that they were married.

Once they had both obtained their respective nursing and medical degrees, Rozella and Gordon settled in McCallsburg. While in McCallsburg, they took care of the medical needs of countless families from 1934 until retiring in 1969. She truly was her husband's "right-hand woman"! The office was in their home. She served as nurse, receptionist, bookkeeper, mother, community volunteer and homemaker.

She also taught Sunday school and sang in the choir at Bethany Lutheran Church and served as president of the PTA. The couple lived in McCallsburg until moving to Story City in 1979, the year of Dr. DuBois' death. In recognition of her years of community service, she received the McCallsburg Lions Club's 1991 Outstanding Citizen Award.

She has two children, JoEtta (the late Dr. James) McClintock, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Dr. David (Suzanne) DuBois, of Colorado Springs, Colo. She has five living grandchildren, Liz, Jim Jr., and David McClintock, and Mary and David DuBois. She has six great-grandchildren.

One grandson, Michael McClintock, died in 2001. She also was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
