Elsie Sandve, 85, of Ames, died today. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Elsie Sandve, 85, of Story City and formerly of Ames, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Bethany Manor in Story City with Chaplain Sandy Anenson officiating.

Elsie Sandve was born March 15, 1922, in Willmar, Minn., to Olaf Ingvald and Elvira (Jacobsen) Rykken. In 1943, she joined the U.S. Cadet Nurses Program. She attended Augsburg College in St. Paul, Minn., and completed the registered nursing program at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis. She was employed as a registered nurse at Mary Greeley Hospital for many years and raised her family in Ames.

She loved spending time with her family, watching travel programs, playing the piano, needlework, reading and working crossword puzzles. Her unconditional love, witty conversation and loving smiles, winks, and waves will be missed by her many family members and friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Jon) Hunziker, of Ames; three sons, William (Sue) Sandve, of Austin, Texas, John Sandve of, Phoenix, and Richard (Ann) Sandve, of Ankeny; six grandchildren, Michelle (Nathan) Bilyeu, of Johnston, Joni (Brian) Tickle, of Ames, Erica and Nate Sandve, of Ankeny, and Kali and Kelsey Sandve, of Phoenix; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Bilyeu, of Johnston; one sister, Marilyn Michaelson, of Coralville; and one cousin, Judith Christensen, of Bloomington, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bruce Sandve in 2004; and one brother, David Rykken.

Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to Bethany Life Communities.

Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is assisting the family.
