Jennie L. Benson, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005 from complications of Alzheimer's in Story City at Bethany Manor, where she resided since 1990.

Memorial services begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 in the Bethany Manor Chapel followed with a luncheon at Bethany Manor, and then a graveside service at rural St. Paul Lutheran Church one mile north of Rosendale (five miles west of Story City). A visitation with family members present will precede the memorial service in the Bethany Manor chapel from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jennie Louella Jacobson was born July 27, 1918 at the family farm near Rosendale, five miles west of Story City. She was the last of eight children of Henry "H. O." Jacobson and Bertha G. (Boe) Jacobson. She was the final surviving sibling of Clarence, Harry (Clara), Hazel (Burton Satre and P.W. Brown), Jeanette (Albert Meyer), Clara (Reuben Nibe), Oleva (Lester Haukoos), and Olena (who died in infancy in 1903). Among her Story City aunts and uncles were Albert, Paul, and Carl Jacobson, Nellie Jacobson (Mrs. Ole Boe), Bertina Jacobson (Mrs. Edward Frette), John Sunnoe, Mike, Olse and Lewis Boe, and Cora Boe (Mrs. Hans Gertsen).

Jennie was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Rosendale, and was educated at the Harrison Township country school near Rosendale (teacher Elvina B. Canady). In 1941 she married Arnold G. Benson of Randall, divorcing in 1954. They had two children, Barry (Sally), now in Des Moines and Steve (Darla), now in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Jennie is also survived by eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and cousins. She retired after 30 years with the General Telephone Office in Story City and at Nevada where she transferred in 1957 when the Story City office went dial and was no longer staffed.
