Grayce Friest, age 92, formerly of Radcliffe, died Thursday, June 15, 2006 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Radcliffe.
Anna Grayce Friest was born Feb. 20, 1914 to Jens and Jetta (Rolfson) Varland north of Radcliffe. She was baptized at Bergen Lutheran church in Roland and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe.
Grayce received her education attending District #4 country school and Radcliffe High School graduating with the Class of 1933. While in high school she received Normal Training and taught country school one year. After teaching, she worked at various places around Radcliffe and Des Moines.
On Feb. 5, 1938 she was united in marriage to Wilburn Friest at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Radcliffe and Garden City area and were members of the Zion Lutheran Church. Grayce was active in teaching Sunday School and Bible School, a member of the Ladies Aid and sang in the choir. Her other activities include Radcliffe Garden Club and Sons of Norway of Story City. Several of her many talents were baking kringla, quilting and embroidery work which all of her family received and treasure.
At the time of her death she was a resident of Bethany Manor in Story City for the past three and a half years.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include her three children, Jo Ann Kuhlman and her friend Jim Weig of Hubbard, Dennis Friest and wife Helen of Radcliffe, and Virginia Jackson and husband Ed of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Kimberly Moore and husband Mark of Woodbury, Minnesota, Kent Kuhlman and wife Deb of Lees Summit, Missouri, Bradley Friest and wife Jodi of Roland, Brent Friest and wife Colette of Radcliffe, Brenda Colvin and husband Kenal of Pella, and Corey Jackson of Omaha, Nebraska; nine great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jessica Moore, Jennifer Kuhlman, Michael Madison, Mason Friest and Sydney, Chase and Lainey Friest; sister Lavonne Sheldahl; sisters-in-law Verdelle Friest, Charlotte Friest and Frances Broer; along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Wilburn.
