Leona D. Sydnes, 95, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006. She had been a resident of Bethany Manor for the past ten years.
Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, with burial at Story City Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church two hours prior to the service.
Leona was born Nov. 30, 1910 to Julius Carl Gates and Anna Martha Josephine (Frohs) Gates in Winthrop, Iowa. She was baptized March 8, 1911 at the Unity Church and graduated from Winthrop High School.
Leona trained as a laboratory and radiology technician at St. Lukes Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and worked as such in Indianapolis, Indiana, Des Moines, and Story City.
On April 25, 1936 Leona was united in marriage with Ernest Edwin Sydnes at Winthrop and farmed at Slater and Roland for 30 years.
Leona is survived by her sons, Allen (Sandie) Sydnes of Windsor Heights and Robert (Sheila) Sydnes of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Brian (Quisook) Sydnes of Germany, Scott Sydnes of Indianola, Robert (Terrill) Sydnes II of Ankeny, Kari Sydnes-Hooten of Cedar Rapids, Helen (Dennis) Coffman of Round Rock, Texas, and Daniel Sydnes of Austin, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her son, George Sydnes; her parents; and five brothers, Julius Carl, George Fredrick, Harry William, Willard Donald, and Lester Vincent; and one sister, Louise Josephine.
