J. Ronald George, 67, of Ames, died Sunday, July 1, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, at Ames First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Iowa State University Cemetery.
Ron George was born April 28, 1940, in Pasco, Wash., to Clara (Miller) and John George. He grew up in Kennewick, Wash. He received a bachelor's degree with honors in agronomy from Washington State University in 1962.
He married Ethel Sutton June 9, 1962, in Kennewick, Wash. That same year, they moved to Lafayette, Ind., where he earned a master's degree (1964) in crop physiology followed by a doctorate. (1966) in forage crop physiology from Purdue University.
In fall 1966, they moved to Ames, where he worked as midwest agronomist with the American Potash Institutes. He joined the ISU agronomy faculty in fall 1969. His innovative, inspiring teaching style touched more than 9,000 students, and he supervised graduate study as a major professor of 22 graduate students. During his career, he authored or co-authored more than 250 publications. He was a fellow of CSSA, ASA and NACTA and has held several offices and committee chair positions for these and other organizations. He retired as professor emeritus of agronomy in 1997.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ethel; one daughter, Sheri Cooper and her husband, Randy; one son, Matt George; and two grandsons, Ben Cooper and Max Cooper. He also is survived by one sister, Dorrene (Robert) Gilbert; two brothers, Loren George and Richard (Rita) George, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at Adams Funeral Home.
