THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, April 13, 2007.

Joanne Croker, 75, of Iowa City, died Thursday, April 12, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Reverend Father Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation in Iowa City, where a Parish Vigil Service will be at 6 p.m.

Joanne Croker was born Feb. 9, 1932, in Adel, the daughter of Merryl Cameron and Lois Leilah Taylor Melton. She was raised around Adel and later Colo, where she graduated from high school. Joanne married James Croker Oct. 15, 1951, in Colo at St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 1952 they moved to Iowa City.

Joanne was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital where she was a member of the Guild. Joanne loved time spent with her family. Other joys in Joanne's life included her love of animals and playing bridge.
Joanne is survived by her husband, James J.; their three children, James C. (Anne) Croker, of Iowa City, and their children, Jennifer of Maple Hill, N.C., Lisa (Chris) Spiek, of East Dundee, Ill., James K., of Iowa City, and Andrew, of St. Charles, Mo., Michael Croker, of Greer, S.C., and Laura (Joe) Moore, of Iowa City, and their children, Nicholas, of Portland Ore., and Abigail, of Iowa City; one sister, Jean Smith, of Adel; and three brothers, Louis Melton, of Hubbard, Darrell (Joanie) Melton, of Altoona, and Kenneth (Sandy) Melton, of Prescott, Ariz.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Maris Louise and Rhea; and one brother, Russell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
