Thomas Jackson (T.J.) Walter, of Luther, died Wednesday, March 28, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, at the First United Methodist Church at Seventh and Arden Street in Boone. Internment will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Rose Hill cemetery east of Luther with full military honors at the graveside by the Boone Veterans Council of Boone.
Thomas Jackson (T.J.) Walter was born April 13, 1930, at home north of Livonia, Mo., to Mike and Effie (Mock) Walter. Walter graduated from Livonia High School in 1946 at age 16. Immediately after graduation he began teaching in the local county school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. In 1954, he attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, Mo.
He married Marjorie Lucille Clark of Unionville, Mo., Nov. 26, 1955. They were blessed with four children. He was a teacher and farmer in northern Missouri and southern Iowa until moving to Jordan and then Luther. He was a math teacher and coach for 42 years, with 29 years at United Community School district until his retirement. He also worked the Kansas wheat harvest, construction and as a claims adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail.
He is survived by wife, Marjorie Lucille Walter; their four children, Gary (Jane), of Kelley, Janet (Randy) Hanson, of Aurora, Colo., Kevin, of Ames, and Monica Heskett (Dave Leck), of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; five grandchildren, Benjamin Walter, Dylan Walter, Ellen Walter, Jake Adkins and Rhonda Heskett; three great-grandchildren, Noella Heskett, Cory Heskett and Jayden Adkins; and two sisters, Betty and Pat.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wilbur, Raymond and Joe; and three sisters, Pauline, Edith and Mary.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story Street in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Diabetes Foundation or Macular Degeneration Foundation.
