Dr. William M. Buck, 82, of Ames, died Thursday, March 29, surrounded by family at the Green Hills Care Center in Ames. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 9, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, in Ames, with private burial service in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Bill Buck was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Ames, the son of Harold and Margaret Buck. He was the eldest of four sons. He graduated from Ames High School in 1942. He attended Iowa State University, and graduated from Dental School at the University of Iowa in 1947. He served in the US Navy (V-12) for two years and the Air Force as a
dental officer for two years. He was married to Cornelia Lindstrom from 1947 until her death in 2000. He entered private practice dentistry in 1953 and practiced at the Buck Dental Clinic in Ames until his retirement in 1995. In 2002, he married Jo Rosauer.

Bill was a member of the Iowa Dental Association, American Dental Association, Boone/Story Dental Study Club, Iowa Inter Professional Committee, Beta Theta Pi social fraternity, Ames Area Railfans, and was involved with public promotions of water fluoridation. His community service included Ames Junior Chamber of Commerce, treasurer and co-winner of the Chamber's Distinguished Service Award; Ames Chamber of Commerce; the Ames Noon Kiwanis Club, where he was a board member, vice president and president; Edwards School PTA president; member of the Ames PTA Council; Advancement Chairman of the Cub and Boys Scouts of America; Ames Recreation Commission; United Way Board (Community Chest); Green Hills Health Care Facility patient advocate; and a volunteer at Reiman Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Rosauer; two sons, Stewart (Mary), of Ankeny, and Peter (Marny), of Ames; stepdaughter, Lucy (Kevin) Kephart, of Brookings, S.D.; stepson, Andrew (Vera) Rosauer, of Dominican Republic; three grandchildren, Andy and Alison Lindy Buck, and Kirsten (Brandon) Goble; five step grandchildren, Jo, Natalie, Jon, and Abbey Kephart, and Alex Rosauer; and three brothers, James, Robert (Anne), and J. Ben (Sarah), all of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mason; and his wife Cornelia (Nike).

He passed on his passion for jazz, big band and symphonic music to his family. Throughout his life he stayed physically active and was an avid bicyclist and hiker. He enjoyed railroads and flying. In his 50s, he obtained a pilot's license, fulfilling a lifelong dream to fly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Reiman Gardens and Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation.
