THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, March 30, 2007.
Aug. 20, 1922-March 24, 2007
Kathryn May McVicker died Saturday, March 24, at Carilion Medical Center in Roanoke, Va. A private visitation was held in Roanoke. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., alongside her husband, Lt. Col. McVicker, who preceded her in death in 1993.
Kathryn May McVicker was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Omaha, Neb. She and her eight siblings were raised in Cedar Bluffs, Neb., where she graduated from high school in 1940. She married Lt. Cecil Don McVicker in August 1942 in Sacramento, Calif.
In 1953, she moved to Ames with her three children and her husband, who had taken a position as an instructor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Iowa State University. She remained in Ames with her husband until he retired from ISU in 1985, at which time they moved to Bradenton, Fla. In January 2007, she moved to Roanoke, Va., to live with her son, Mark, and his wife.
She was a voluminous reader and world traveler. Although she didn't go to college, she was well-educated and knowledgeable about many things. She loved classical music, opera and poetry, especially Emily Dickinson. She was a devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by her three children, Maureen (David) Trump, of Fort Collins, Colo., Mark (Lynn) McVicker, of Roanoke, Va., and Amy (Terry) Keith, of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
Her children bid her godspeed. Wherever you are, Mom, we hope it looks just like Monterey, Calif.
