Joseph Klinsky, 85, of Ames, died Monday, March 12, at Green Hills Health Care Center. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Joseph (Joe) W. Klinsky, 85, of Ames, died Monday, March 12, at Green Hills Care Center. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames, followed by a brief service of remembrance. A visitation also will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, in Cedar Rapids. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., and burial will be in Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Joseph Wesley Klinsky was born July 17, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, to Joseph and Zora Bezdek Klinsky. He married Marianne Trejtnar Sept. 3, 1943. He attended Iowa State University and earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He was employed by the Goodyear Synthetic Rubber Corp. in Akron, Ohio, taught chemistry in Boone and Creston Community College, was employed by Cryovac Corp. in Cedar Rapids and was an industrial hygienist at the University Hygienic Laboratory in Iowa City, and at the Environmental Health and Safety Department at Iowa State University until he retired in 1986.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Lions International, both of Ames. Throughout his career as an industrial hygienist, he was active in a broad range of professional associations and served as chair both of the Iowa Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

He was an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 203 in Iowa City and enjoyed many years of scouting activities with his sons. Following retirement, he was active in several volunteer organizations. He was on the Board of Directors at Stonehaven and Keystone residences for seniors and the Heartland Senior Center. He chaired the Resident Advocacy Committee for the North Grand Care Center (now Abbington) for many years. He enjoyed gardening, was a member of Ames Garden Club and for many years planned the Senior Center Feature Garden. He worked in the rose gardens with his wife, Marianne, helping with their 250 rose bushes. In 2002, he became a consulting rosarian for the American Rose Society. He wrote a book on the Inter-face of Science and Religion, another outlining a nutritional rationale and a booklet of sage sayings.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne; son, Joseph Dennis, and his wife, Rose, of Ontario, Canada; two grandchildren, Sonja, of Vancouver, Canada, and Aaron, of New York City; son, Ronald Gary, and his partner, Pam Hegerfeld, of Spencer; and Rufus Bender, the partner of his deceased daughter, Pam Fisher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Janice Ellen and Pamela Fisher; and one brother, Robert E. Klinsky.

Memorials may be given to the Endowment Foundation at First United Methodist Church in Ames, Heartland Senior Services in Ames or the Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids.
