Genevieve Marjorie Kainlauri, 86, of Ames, died Friday, Feb. 16, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church.

Genevieve Marjorie Kainlauri was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Mercer County, Mo., the daughter of Jerome and Mary Mobley. She married Eino Kainlauri Aug. 20, 1949, in Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1948, she received a bachelor's degree in education from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, and in 1955, obtained a M.Ed. from the University of Michigan.

She loved working with children and had a long and distinguished teaching career. She taught in Iowa, Wyoming, California, Arizona and Colorado before coming to Michigan to teach at Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint, Mich. She taught in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for 32 years.

In Ann Arbor, she was an elementary school classroom teacher, a consultant for emotionally disturbed and learning disabled children and a language arts coordinator. She worked with the University of Michigan staff in setting up summer field experiences for U of M students majoring in special education. She served on a committee that planned and set up a team teaching school, which received a National School of the Year Award. Her professional activities included involvement in the Council for Exceptional Children, National Education Association, Ann Arbor Education Association and Michigan Association for E.D. and L.D. children. She also was a member of the Ann Arbor Teachers Club and AAUW. She retired from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 1981.

In Ames, she worked for one year for Heartland A.E.A. assessing special education needs in Story and Boone counties and helped to set up special programs. She was a peer counselor, volunteer tutor in the E.S.L. program, a Lioness, a member of ISU Women's Club and St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed traveling, attending ballets, plays and musical events, and many happy times with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Jon and William Kainlauri, both of San Francisco; one daughter, Mary Ann Shao; three grandchildren, Amie, Julia and Andrew Shao, of Ames; and one sister, Virginia Lawrence, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
